World War 2 Hellcats and Dogfights

World War 2 Stories - The F6F Hellcat is considered as one of the best fighter planes of the US Navy to counter the Japanese Zeros. In December 1941, the Americans began experimenting the performance of F4F Wildcat's performance against the Japanese Zeros, by there they developed something more powerful and faster and that's the birth of Hellcat.  The
Hellcat was much larger with a low-mounted wing. Armed with six .50 cal. M2 machine guns, which could swiftly dive and perfect for dogfighting with the Japanese A6M fighter.  Hellcat has a perfect armor to protect the pilot and the essential parts of the aircraft making it hard to be killed.

Hellcats  is designed for Zero and it indeed scores thousand of kills, according to the US Navy the aircraft downed
5,271 aircrafts and that's a good record for World War 2 aircraft.
Though Hellcat could roll faster at high speeds, the Zero could out-turn the Hellcat at lower speeds as well as could climb faster at lower altitudes. so the American Pilots were advised not to combat the Zeros in close battle.

During its service in World War II, the F6F Hellcat became the most successful naval fighter of all time with a total of 5,271 kills. Of these, 5,163 were scored by US Navy and US Marine Corps pilots against a loss of 270 Hellcats. This resulted in a remarkable kill ratio of 19:1. Designed as a "Zero killer," the F6F maintained a kill ratio of 13:1 against the Japanese fighter. Assisted during the war by the distinctive Chance Vought F4U Corsair, the two formed a lethal duo. With the end of the war, the Hellcat was phased out of service as the new F8F Bearcat began to arrive.
