ATROCITIES OF GERMAN SOLDIERS DURING WORLD WAR 2

Author: Mark Pernia
World War 2 - After World War 1, nations agreed to create a league of nations which will address disputes between nations and ideally avoid the reoccurrence of the First World War. History looks back at the League of Nations as something that had good intentions but in entirety failed to keep global peace. Out of the ashes of the defeated Germany, views of fascism emerged and heavily influenced a lot of Germans. Most especially Adolf Hitler, who was a charismatic leader and was able to fast track his career from an ordinary soldier to a Furer, His anger towards German Jews, grew deeper and heightened by ideology that tells of a pure race of der  uber metch  or a super human race.

As such, he saw other races as inferior and undesirable; such is true on how he saw the German Jews. He believed that the motherland Germany must only be for pure blooded Germans. While conquering most parts of Europe and making his enemies pay dearly with his Blitzkrieg. As his armies marched and claimed other nations and territory they also maltreated their prisoners of war either by unceremoniously killing them, torture in concentration camps, or as test subjects for their biological weapons. They acted as conquerors of old in areas each German detachment / garrison was detailed; they pillaged, raped, and killed a lot of people in various areas. Although there were some people that collaborated with the Germans, these individuals would later be viewed and treated as traitors and punished accordingly. Those Jews and prisoners of war in German concentration camps became guinea pigs for the fulfillment of Hitler’s “Final Solution” which was a plan for genocide. This barbaric plan was created because there were many Jews in Europe would prove to be costly in resources and a long process. The final solution is a way where they could efficiently exterminate as many Jews as possible in a shorter time frame. And this process was to bring a lot of Jews in chambers where they are locked in and exposed to a biological gas that would slowly kill them. Each day hundreds of thousands of Jews die through the gas chamber, while those waiting for their turn in the gas chamber also suffered not only by their maltreatment by the German soldier and starvation but psychological torment as well due to either the loss of a loved one or a family member; and the fear of an agonizing death that awaits them. The pain and misery caused by the Nazi’s came to be called by some historians like Bro. Gregory Wright of DLSU, as evil incarnate. But it is through their greed and pride that eventually led to their downfall. The Allied forces were able to liberate those nations occupied by Germany and eventually the entire Europe was liberated. All those who were instrumental in Hitler’s plans were judged in and international court and found guilty on crimes against humanity and were sentenced to death, which I believe is commensurate to the gravity of what they did not only to other nations but as well as to the Jew’s.
